Generating Questions Automatically from Informational Text
نویسندگان
چکیده
Good readers ask themselves questions during reading. Our goal is to scaffold this self-questioning strategy automatically to help children in grades 1-3 understand informational text. In previous work, we showed that instruction for self-questioning can be generated for narrative text. This paper tests the generality of that approach by applying it to informational text. We describe the modifications required, and evaluate the approach on informational texts from Project LISTEN’s Reading Tutor.

متن کاملQuestion Generation for Language Learning: From ensuring texts are read to supporting learning
In Foreign Language Teaching and Learning (FLTL), questions are systematically used to assess the learner’s understanding of a text. Computational linguistic (CL) approaches have been developed to generate such questions automatically given a text (e.g., Heilman, 2011). In this paper, we want to broaden the perspective on the different functions questions can play in FLTL and discuss how automa...
متن کاملMind the Gap: Learning to Choose Gaps for Question Generation
Not all learning takes place in an educational setting: more and more self-motivated learners are turning to on-line text to learn about new topics. Our goal is to provide such learners with the well-known benefits of testing by automatically generating quiz questions for online text. Prior work on question generation has focused on the grammaticality of generated questions and generating effec...
متن کاملAutomatic Generation of Context-Based Fill-in-the-Blank Exercises Using Co-occurrence Likelihoods and Google n-grams
In this paper, we propose a method of automatically generating multiple-choice fill-inthe-blank exercises from existing text passages that challenge a reader’s comprehension skills and contextual awareness. We use a unique application of word co-occurrence likelihoods and the Google n-grams corpus to select words with strong contextual links to their surrounding text, and to generate distractor...
متن کاملA Two-Stage Approach for Generating Unbiased Estimates of Text Complexity
Many existing approaches for measuring text complexity tend to overestimate the complexity levels of informational texts while simultaneously underestimating the complexity levels of literary texts. We present a two-stage estimation technique that successfully addresses this problem. At Stage 1, each text is classified into one or another of three possible genres: informational, literary or mix...
